Course Overview

This Upskill provides the skills and knowledge required to promote trauma informed care, and to develop strategies to address people’s specific trauma needs. Trauma informed care involves providing services that are informed by the knowledge and understanding of the impact of trauma, in particular interpersonal violence and varying service practice to reduce the likelihood of re-traumatisation.

The Course includes a Study Guide, a Book of Readings, and recorded webinars, and is completed through passing a multiple-choice assessment. The Study Guide will take you through the core content of the course, including information on trauma, different perspectives on trauma-informed care and practices, special considerations when working with clients with a trauma history, as well as considerations when implementing trauma-informed care and practice. These are supported by selected readings (all contained within the Book of Readings), each of which has been selected to expand or elaborate upon a particular area of knowledge or skill.

Upon completion of this course you will have:

Understand trauma, including its prevalence, types and effects
Examine different perspectives of trauma-informed care
Understand how to support clients with trauma histories
Learn how to implement trauma-informed practice and care

Course Outline

This Course is divided into 4 Parts:

The upskill starts with information about the three aspects of trauma, as well as understanding its prevalence in Australia. Following this, you will learn about the different types and effects of trauma.

Now you understand the concept and effects of trauma, it’s time to look at how trauma-informed care and practices came to be. This section also provides information on the TICP Framework which will help to challenge current views and adapt practices around trauma.

An important facet of trauma informed care and practice is to understand the different treatment options that clients with trauma histories might require. Information about specialised supports for clients whose trauma experiences are complex are also provided.

This final section looks at how workers can engage survivors in a trauma-informed way by narrowing the focus to the specific worker-related goals of trauma informed care and practice.
