UPSKILL MICRO-CREDENTIAL

Creative and Critical Thinking (CCT)

When you hear the words creative thinking, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For many of us, our mind goes immediately to things like music, painting, creative writing, and other forms of artistic expression. Some people also think that we are either born with natural creative talent or we aren’t, and that this can’t change.

Creative thinking is actually the ability to look at things in different ways. This might involve painting a masterpiece or writing an original piece of music. But it can also involve looking at problems through different lenses and perspectives, seeing problems as opportunities for change or growth, examining and reimagining existing solutions, coming up with new solutions, combining existing ideas to come up with something new, developing and testing theories and ideas, and much more. To use an old cliché, creative thinking is ‘thinking outside the box’.

Course Outline

This Course is divided into 4 Parts:

This first section provides an overview of what creative thinking and its many benefits, before reviewing the creative thinking process using the IDEALS model. An in-depth review of the three stage model of creative problem solving is undertaken by examining the roles of problem identification, ideation and critical evaluation. The section wraps up by looking at how creative thinking can be used in the workplace – both as employees and as leaders.
Part of creative and critical thinking is the ability to undertake logical reasoning. This is done by examining the concepts of deductive, inductive and abductive reasoning. This section also breaks down the different parts of an argument and a number of applications of logical thinking. Once you have the basics down, we then focus on how you can use these different kinds of reasoning in everyday life and work to help make persuasive arguments.
We make hundreds of decisions each day – often without thinking or by using shortcuts. This section helps us to reflect on our decision making processes by examining the many different types of cognitive biases, such as the availability heuristic, Dunning-Kruger effect and fundamental attribution error. Once we can identify these biases, we can learn how to overcome these by using strategies such as prospective hindsight and opportunity costs. This section finishes by examining how thinking traps led to a real-life disaster.
This Upskill finishes by looking at the higher order thinking skill of critical evaluation. This is done by looking at several critical thinking models such as the CRAAP test and Red Model, as well as how to address the many challenges in critical thinking and evaluation. As with the previous sections, we then look at how we can take these concepts and apply in workplace risk assessment, data analysis, recruitment and decision-making.
