UPSKILL MICRO-CREDENTIAL

Mental Wellbeing in the Workplace (MWW)

According to reports from SafeWork Australia around 91% of worker’s compensation claims between 2014-2015 involving a mental health condition were linked to work-related or mental stress. Health and welfare support workers, specifically indigenous health workers and social and welfare professionals, were amongst the highest rates of claims of this kind.

Studies have shown that psychological health within the workplace is best supported and improved by interventions that combine personal stress management strategies, with organisational frameworks that support increased participation in decision-making and problem-solving, social support, and communication.

For this to be achieved, the culture of a workplace must be able to recognise the importance of supporting employee wellbeing, understand factors that can negatively impact on the psychological health of workers, and have strategies in place to both support ongoing mental wellbeing, and address psychological concerns if and when they arise.

Course Overview

It is important that those in the helping profession are supported and improved by interventions that combine personal stress management strategies with organisational frameworks that support increased participation.

This course has been specifically designed for helping professionals, building on your existing knowledge, skills and practical experience, and helping you develop understanding, techniques and strategies to assist you as you continue your professional journey.

The Course includes a Study Guide, a Book of Readings, and recorded webinars, and is completed through passing a multiple-choice assessment. The Study Guide will take you through the core content of the course, including information about personal and professional strategies within the field of human services, professional considerations, examples of practices for your specific workplace, and more. These are supported by selected readings (all contained within the Book of Readings), each of which has been selected to expand or elaborate upon a particular area of knowledge or skill.

Upon completion of this course you will have:

Examine the key components of a healthy workplace
Measure and improve your personal resilience
Incorporate psychological acceptance in your organisation
Recognise and address compassion fatigue, burnout and vicarious trauma

Course Outline

This Course is divided into 4 Parts:

This Upskill begins with an examination of the cost that work-related mental health issues and/or stress has, as well as the five main domains which determine the relevant wellness of an individual in an organisation – job design, team/group factors, organisational factors, home/work conflict and individual biopsychosocial factors. Following this, you have the chance to measure your personal resilience by using the Ego Resiliency Scale. The section wraps up with an overview of the six recommended domains of the APS Mental Health Capability Framework.
Psychological acceptance has been found to be one of the strongest determinants of wellbeing within a workplace environment. Therefore, the focus of this section is on how to improve levels of safety, openness and communication with work colleagues. This is done by taking the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, then looking at the role mental-health stigma can play in workplaces which can lead to the fear of discrimination and a barrier to seeking support.
When looking at Secondary Traumatic Stress and Vicarious Trauma and their implications, it is important for practitioners to consider organisational culture and the effect of agency culture on individual workers. This section will provide definitions and differences of these concepts, as well highlighting risk factors – personal, client-based and organisational. It also contains a Professional Quality of Life Scale assessment questionnaire to complete. Finally, there is an in-depth look at how to help colleagues whilst maintaining professional boundaries.
As workers within the field of human services, the promotion of self-care to our clients and colleagues is standard practice. However, practitioners can often struggle to identify ways in which they can apply these to themselves. Discussing the need for increasing social supports, identifying meaningful activities, exploring new experiences and learning opportunities, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regime with clients, does not necessarily equate to reflecting on the practitioner’s own self-care regime. Therefore, we will examine personal and professional strategies of self-care, as well as how to make the most of your clinical and line-management supervision.
