UPSKILL MICRO-CREDENTIAL

Working with Children (WWC)

Having children as your client brings with it a range of unique rewards and challenges. Their cognitive, emotional and physical development can occur at a rapid pace, all whilst trying to make sense of the world. This can lead them to be extremely vulnerable. Your counselling space needs to be appealing and you need to have a large repertoire of skills and activities to keep your clients engaged.

More often than not, you will also have to juggle multiple relationships, primarily with caregivers/parents and schools. It is important that you feel confident to properly set up expectations with each stakeholder. You also need to have a firm grasp of important ethical and legislative requirements when dealing with this age group, as you may find yourself working with children at risk of abuse, harm and neglect.

Course Overview

This Upskill will introduce you to important topics and theories related to working with children (aged 2-12) in a therapeutic setting, as well as to enrich your own skill set and confidence.

This course has been specifically designed for helping professionals, building on your existing knowledge, skills and practical experience, and helping you develop understanding, techniques and strategies to assist you as you continue your professional journey.

The Course includes a Study Guide, a Book of Readings, and recorded webinars, and is completed through passing a multiple-choice assessment. The Study Guide will take you through the core content of the course, including information on important topics and practical skills for working with children in a therapeutic setting. These are supported by selected readings (all contained within the Book of Readings), each of which has been selected to expand or elaborate upon a particular area of knowledge or skill.

Upon completion of this course you will have:

Understand the main developmental theories and frameworks
Learn how to quickly develop trust and rapport with young clients
Work effectively with other stakeholders of your client
Examine how trauma, abuse and neglect impacts children

Course Outline

This Course is divided into 4 Parts:

This section begins by examining attachment styles and how to develop a child-centric approach to practice. This includes how to develop rapport and appropriately discuss confidentiality. Time is also spent on some activities to help your client set goals, such as using media and drawings. It also looks at how to balance these goals with their caregivers’ expectations and universally accepted goals for therapy. Finally, some of the more practical aspects of working with this age group are discussed, like how to set up a child-friendly office.
It is rare that when working with children they will be your sole client. More often than not, you will be working with other people in conjunction, particularly with families, and in different settings such as schools, community organisations, hospitals and outreach centres. This section will cover the basis of where different child work can take place, how to engage with families, external referrals and governmental agencies. It also spends time looking at humanitarian and trauma settings as well as locked environments and foster homes.
An often overlooked part of working with children is how to work with those who may be facing health conditions. These conditions can include medical conditions such as an ongoing illness, permanent or temporary injuries, disabilities, palliative conditions and other physical conditions. It also covers psychological, developmental and mental health conditions such as ASD, ADHD, anxiety, learning disabilities, adjustment disorders and attachment disorders. This section aims to increase your confidence when working with children and the families of those children who face health conditions. It looks at the holistic impact a diagnosis can have, as well as how to help increase parental confidence and family cohesion.
When trauma occurs in children, the effects can be much different to those experienced by adults. This can come down to many reasons, including their developmental stage, understanding of the event and feelings associated, support from care givers and the nature of the event. Another aspect to remember is that children are more vulnerable than many adults, and adverse childhood experiences can have long lasting effects – even when children themselves may not remember the event. This section will cover trauma, abuse, harm and neglect; the effect it has on children; and how we can apply our knowledge of trauma to our practice.
