UPSKILL MICRO-CREDENTIAL

Working with Adolescents (WWA)

Working with adolescents is a rewarding and challenging area. Teenage years bring with them a new set of challenges for clients, which include the start of puberty, a deeper understanding of their world, a desire for independence, romantic relationships and a focus on the future. Additionally, it is a time where parents/caregivers begin to struggle with understanding the changes in their child’s behaviour, new friendship groups and desire to have more independence. It is a time of change and growth (some angst), often marred by teens pushing the status quo of their families and wishing to create their own space in the world. This at times can cause disruption in their wellbeing and sense of self. As therapists, it is important that we work with them to assist through these times to create the foundation for stable mental wellbeing, both now and in the future.

Course Overview

This course will focus on working with adolescents, in particular, how to assist them and create strong working relationships. The focus of the content is on adolescents (teenagers) from the ages of 13 – 19. Different terms may be used to describe age groups: children (<18), younger teenagers (13-15), mid-year teenagers (15-17) and young adults (17-19).

This course has been specifically designed for helping professionals, building on your existing knowledge, skills and practical experience, and helping you develop understanding, techniques and strategies to assist you as you continue your professional journey.

The Course includes a Study Guide, a Book of Readings, and recorded webinars, and is completed through passing a multiple-choice assessment. The Study Guide will take you through the core content of the course, including information on important topics and practical skills for working with adolescents in a therapeutic setting. These are supported by selected readings (all contained within the Book of Readings), each of which has been selected to expand or elaborate upon a particular area of knowledge or skill.

Upon completion of this course you will have:

Understand the differences between the therapeutic relationship with adolescents versus adults
Examine some common concerns that adolescents bring to counselling
Work with adolescents with mental health issues or at risk of suicide
Learn how trauma, abuse and neglect impacts teenagers

Course Outline

This Course is divided into 4 Parts:

During the initial stages of therapy, it is important that you take the time to get to know your client. Adolescents, unlike some children, do not want their parents to dictate how their sessions will work. Practitioners will learn how to use the Gillick competence test to determine whether clients have the maturity to consent to treatment and understand confidentiality. We will also look at activities to build rapport and to help understand client’s needs and goals.
Whilst adolescence can be an exciting time for many, there are also many emerging challenges for teenagers to navigate. Therefore, this section examines how counsellors can help with some of these growing pains. These include how to deal with social media and online communities; peer pressure and bullying; engaging with clients who use alcohol and drugs; clients that undertake risky behaviours; and navigating romantic relationships. We also look at how to use the public health model when using a harm minimisation approach in these areas.
Despite how teens may be portrayed in popular media – carefree, uninterested, difficult or rebellious, they are still learning to be adults and need support. This is especially important when it comes to their mental health. At least 24% of teenagers experience psychological distress, and the COVID-19 pandemic is projected to increase this number. To help with this growth, this section will provide tips on how to approach anxiety, depression and self-harm with our teen clients, as well as when they disclose suicidal thoughts.
Teenagers are exposed to different situations, including things they may overhear, see in person or online, and experiences they may have. When trauma occurs in teenagers, the effects can be very different to those experienced by children or adults. This can come down to many reasons, including their developmental stage, understanding of the event and feelings associated, support from care givers, and the nature of the event. Teenagers have a deeper understanding of the world than children, but not yet all the skills needed to problem solve as adults. As such, they are more vulnerable than many adults, and trauma can have long lasting effects – even when the teenager themselves may deny the impact of the event. This section will explore what trauma is, how it affects clients and how to respond to disclosures of abuse, neglect or harm.
