[CHCMHS005] Provide services to people with co-existing mental health and other alcohol and other drugs issues

This unit introduces you to the skills and knowledge to work together with clients with co-existing mental health and AOD issues, such as working collaboratively to develop and implement a plan of action to address their co-existing needs. You will also learn how to provide support and services to clients such that the risks they may experience are minimised and address their needs for further care, if required.

This unit focuses on the individual needs and rights of clients and how to assist them.

[CHCDIV001] Work with diverse people

This unit gives the student the opportunity to reflect upon gender, culture, ethnicity, subculture, sexuality and ability and how they are each to be valued and respected within our community and a counselling context.

[CHCDIV002] Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety

Students will gain the relevant skills and knowledge to work respectfully within diverse cultures and social situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Students will learn how to identify, develop strategies and model cultural safety issues within the workplace and with clients.

Students will gain the skills and knowledge to be able to source, analyse, develop and implement community programs.

[CHCCSL001] Establish and confirm the counselling relationship #

The unit introduces a structured approach to counselling to establish the client-counsellor relationship.

[CHCCSL002] Apply specialist interpersonal and counselling interview skills #

This unit involves the exploration and application of skills and knowledge required to use advanced interpersonal communication skills to facilitate the client-counsellor relationship in a counselling situation.

[CHCCSL007] Support counselling clients in decision-making processes #

Students learn how to assist clients to clarify their goals, explore options and develop a course of action.

[CHCCCS019] Recognise and respond to crisis situations #

This unit focuses on working effectively with clients at risk or in crisis. Particularly, you will learn how to identify, address and respond to various crisis situations, and facilitate referrals where appropriate. You will also learn about the importance of self-care and supervision in crisis support work.

[CHCDFV001] Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence #

Students will learn how to identify and respond to the needs of clients who may be experiencing domestic and family violence, including responding to immediate intervention and support needs.

[CHCFIN006] Establish the financial counselling relationship # *

This unit reviews the skills and knowledge required to holistically assess and respond to the immediate and ongoing needs of clients and responding by using a structured and client-focused financial counselling approach.

[CHCLEG002] Interpret and use legal information # *

Students learn how to source and interpret relevant legislation and regulations to support clients.

[CHCFIN007] Provide advice, counselling and representation to financial counselling clients # *

Students learn how to analyse and use technical information to assist clients to understand their rights and make informed decisions about financial and other issues.

[CHCFIN008] Apply professional standards in financial counselling # *

This unit provides the skills and knowledge that financial counsellors require to maintain standards of professional practice in the provision of financial counselling.

[CHCFIN009] Provide financial counselling and systemic advocacy within a social justice framework # *

Students learn how to provide financial counselling services to clients who are impacted by systemic issues and to participate in systemic advocacy.

[CHCFIN010] Apply basic concepts of small business to financial counselling *

This unit helps students identify the structure and current financial position of a small business and provide information and advice as part of the delivery of financial counselling services to a client with a small business.

[CHCPRP003] Reflect on and improve own professional practice

The final unit focuses on the importance of engaging in a reflective practice and professional development. Specifically, you will learn to reflect on and evaluate your professional practice, partake in supervision processes, and plan for ongoing professional development to support a sustainable practice framework.

Students can also complete their practical components by recording their demonstration of skills and uploading to us. We have guidelines available to assist students compile their recordings and develop effective role plays to demonstrate their skills.
