The Institute’s Certificate IV of Youth Work qualification provides you with skills and knowledge to work as part of a broader support team. The course is developed with practical components that are industry relevant to give you confidence in applying your knowledge and skills in the real world. You will be able to work in community, government, and youth sector agencies. You are also eligible to upgrade to AIPC’s Diploma of Youth Work (CHC40421), automatically receiving 10 units of credit.

In this unit learn how to engage and communicate with young people within roles specifically focused on youth-centred practices.

[CHCDIV002] Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety

Students will gain the relevant skills and knowledge to work respectfully within diverse cultures and social situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Students will learn how to identify, develop strategies and model cultural safety issues within the workplace and with clients.

This unit explores the legal and ethical frameworks in which you are required to work within. You will learn how to fulfil specific legal and ethical responsibilities as well as how to address common legal and ethical issues within your practice.

[CHCCOM002] Use communication to build relationships #

Students will learn how to use specific communication techniques to establish, build and maintain relationships with clients, colleagues and other stakeholders based on respect and trust.

[CHCGRP002] Plan and conduct group activities #

In this unit, students will learn how to work in both formal and informal group-settings, encouraging and promoting communication channels with participants.

[CHCPRP001] Develop and maintain networks and collaborative partnerships #

This unit focuses on developing networks, service delivery and improving your professional practice.

[HLTWHS001] Participate in workplace health and safety *

Students will learn how to identify and participate in safe work practices both for self and others, within the work environment.

Students will learn both contemporary and historical practices to assist in understanding the current contexts of youth work practices.

[CHCMHS001] Work with people with mental health issues #

This unit focuses on how to work respectfully with clients experiencing mental health concerns. You will learn about the key principles and practices in working collaboratively with a client, their support network, and other service providers, in order to best meet their needs.

[CHCAOD001] Work in an alcohol or other drugs context #

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand and apply information relevant to working with a client in an alcohol and other drugs context.

[CHCYTH015] Support young people to create opportunities in their lives *

This unit will help students to be able to assist young people to identify the challenges and opportunities in their lives and to work towards their goals on an individual or group level.

[CHCYTH022] Provide services for the needs and circumstances of young people *

Students will learn how to provide guidance and role models to young people and their families, or nominated carer, to maintain positive and supportive relationships, while identifying problems and establishing goals for change based on maintaining support from family, nominated carer and the general community.

[CHCPRT025] Identify and report children and young people at risk # *

Working within relevant legislation and policies, students will learn how to work within their duty of care towards children and young people who are at risk of harm.

[CHCYTH016] Respond to critical situations #

In this unit, students are provided with the appropriate skills and knowledge to develop relevant frameworks to respond to crisis situations with young people.

[CHCMHS007] Work effectively in trauma informed care

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of trauma informed care within a service.

[CHCDFV001] Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence #

Students will learn how to identify and respond to the needs of clients who may be experiencing domestic and family violence, including responding to immediate intervention and support needs.

# These units require the practical demonstration of skills in a real or simulated work environment.

* This course also requires completion of a work placement of a minimum of 100 hours.

They can be completed either on-campus (via four 1-day workshops), online (via Zoom/Skype), by uploading a video demonstration, or by having a private assessor assess your skills.

Regular seminars give you the opportunity to apply the theory you have learned in contemporary scenarios. They are also a great opportunity to get together with fellow students and participate in casework sessions under the guidance of a qualified Lecturer. Seminars are held regularly in most capital cities throughout Australia.

Students who may not be able to attend seminars for whatever reason, can elect to complete the practical components through alternate means, such as a one-on-one or small group session with a private assessor. We have private assessors in numerous regional areas across Australia.

Students can also complete their practical components by video recording a demonstration of their skills. We have guidelines available to assist students compile their recordings and develop effective role plays to demonstrate their skills.

Optional tutorials are available at most Student Support Centres. Tutorials provide you with support on each written subject.
